“You are eternal beings in temporary bodies.”
– Abraham-Hicks
“Who am I?” is a question you’ve probably asked yourself many times throughout your life, answering with titles such as teacher, parent, entrepreneur or dancer. You may have responded with labels like smart, funny, attractive or “needs work.”
These are all answers to who you believe yourself to be as you identify with the temporary personality you adopted for this adventure in time-space reality.
The truth of Who You Really Are is quite different. Who You Really Are is Consciousness focused in a unique and valuable perspective, a physical expression of Source Energy, an indispensable part of All-That-Is.
In his twenties and thirties, my brother studied Hinduism and started telling me, “You are not this body-mind.” At the time, I had no idea what he was talking about and even found it a tad offensive.
I now understand this: Although I may currently and temporarily reside in this body-mind, eternally I am much more than that.
Why does knowing Who You Really Are matter?
It matters because who you believe you are determines what you allow yourself to manifest. Your circumstances always match who you believe yourself to be.
In The Taboo Against Knowing Who You Really Are, Alan Watts writes, “the most strongly enforced of all known taboos is the taboo against knowing who or what you really are.” He goes on to state emphatically that you are one with God. And, of course, so is everyone else.
Let’s retire this taboo against knowing Who We Really Are. Let’s shift from believing we’re limited, flawed and powerless, to seeing ourselves as the glorious, wise, joyful, loving, magnificent beings we truly are.
